Cinematographer Rob Sweeney has captured a who's who of Hollywood actors in a panorama of independent dramatic features. In 2002, he worked at the Sundance Director's Lab, where he had his first exposure to Sony Digital Master tape, which is designed for DVCAM and mini-DV camcorders.
Sweeney explains, "We shot exteriors in hot summer temperatures, 90 to 100 degrees. And there were some exteriors that were at dusk, in mountains and cold around 35 or 50 degrees. It really didn't affect the Digital Master tape at all."
"I was pleased with the way the tape performed. There was not one instance of malfunction of the cassette. It just functioned really well. I thought it was very solid, dependable, reliable way to master. I definitely recommend it."
Sweeney calls putting mini-DV tape into a DVCAM camcorder "foolhardy." He says, "You certainly don't want to blow up onto film something that isn't the best quality to begin with."
