Church on the Rock Builds for Future with Sony

The Church on the Rock, in St. Peters , Mo. , founded by Pastors David and Kim Blunt with 35 people in a local library in 1983, rapidly mushroomed to 4,500 members worshipping in a 3,000 seat sanctuary. Technological capabilities have always been a high priority for the Blunts, including a commitment to Sony broadcast equipment.

HDC-1550 in use at The Church on the RockThe ministry now has its services broadcast each week on KDNL, a local ABC affiliate, as well as on The Church Channel, The DAYSTAR Network, and the National Religious Broadcasters channel. According to the church's director of communication, Mark Horvath, working with Sony has allowed them to achieve these capabilities.

“We really needed to take our TV technology to the next level,” Horvath said. “That meant addressing our cameras since they were terribly out of date.”
For the church's latest upgrade, the Blunts and Horvath worked with Sony and a systems integrator, Venue Services Group, to do a camera upgrade and to build a video control station, as well as upgrade the facility's monitoring capabilities. "We consulted with VSG and relied on their system expertise to choose the right products that met our needs," Horvath said.

Sony’s Anycast Station System Expands Live Event Capabilities

Sony Anycast Station - AWS-G500How many volunteers does it take to do a live remote? At least three: one to handle audio, one for video switching, and one to direct the show, maybe even more if multiple camera stations need to be operated.

How many does it take to do a live remote with Sony's Anycast Station™ system? Just one using the remote “studio-in-a-box” to handle all of the above functions, and more.

Since it was first introduced in 2004, the system has been continually enhanced to allow a wider scope of users to take advantage of this portable “all-in-one” studio for live content creation. Several software upgrades have added new functionality and a range of customers, especially in the house-of-worship market, have taken notice.

Ministries Taking Full Advantage of Robotic PTZ Capabilities

EVI-HD1Ministries that are converting their infrastructures to high-definition but still need high levels of flexibility now have another option to choose from, with Sony’s new EVI-HD1 high-definition robotic camera. The new camera can be used in a variety of applications throughout a church’s complex or in smaller multi-purpose rooms, for distance learning, videoconferencing and even training and communicating with church personnel.

For example, in a videoconferencing or distance learning scenario, the EVI-HD1 can be used to “bring in” guest speakers during a service or a community event, having them appear “virtually” rather than incur travel expenses and time to appear in person.

The single chip-based, pan/tilt/zoom camera features multi-format capabilities to output both standard- and high-definition video so users can easily migrate from standard-definition to HD.

Ministries View Pro Displays in a New Light

LUMA Monitors Logo

With the need to upgrade on the agendas of many organizations, including ministries, video production professionals are continually making plans to implement the next iteration of technology. In terms of professional displays, this means a transition from cathode ray tube (CRT) monitors to liquid crystal displays, commonly referred to as LCDs.

LMD-232WSBut there is a range of issues associated with this migration, and houses of worship need to ask themselves very specific questions before deciding on which type of monitor is right for them.

For example, are you doing desktop publishing, to produce printed materials for use during services? Do you need to display information electronically throughout your complex, to tell members when the next service begins or to promote events in a community center or multi-purpose room? Or, are you doing traditional video production, editing services or events for release on DVD, for example?
