The recent
installation of a Sony DMS-B80L PetaSite
automated tape library at Knowles Electronics
Holding, Inc., in Itasca, IL, has reduced
the company’s database backup time by almost
75 percent.
Since August, the PetaSite automated tape
library configured with one DTF-2® fiber-attached
tape drive, has decreased backup time from
36 hours to fewer than 10. The DTF-2 drive
are achieving 24MB/sec sustained transfer
rate and upwards of 600GB of compressed
data per tape (200GB native), twice the
speed and capacity of the DTF format’s closest
competitors.
Knowles,
a worldwide manufacturer of hearing aid,
automotive, and other minielectronic components,
is using this Sony solution to back up 2.5TBs
of data week from its Oracle ERP and supporting
systems, which operate 24 hours a day, seven
days a week, sustaining the company’s global
operations and allowing employees to access
and change database information without
freezes or slowdowns. Offsite storage has
also been reduced to one-tenth of previous
requirements.
“The PetaSite automated tape library has
solved many time and money problems, and
far surpasses everything on the market in
cost-to-performance ratio,” says Richard
Dase, Knowles’ director of technology.
“As recently as two months ago, I would
have to get out of bed at 3 a.m. after receiving
a page from our old system alerting me that
the backup was frozen,” says Mike Swank,
network analyst at Knowles Electronics.
“Even after rebooting the system, there
was still a constant risk of losing data
and production time. Sony has eliminated
all of that.”
Knowles was previously using four DLT 7000
drives and 20 NT servers to handle its data
backup and recall. The PetaSite automated
tape library installed at Knowles works
in conjunction with Veritas Net Backup 3.4,
Brocade fiber switches, and Hitachi’s 9400
Disk Storage. Knowle’s investment in fiber-attached
drives paves the way for Knowles to seamlessly
move to serverless backup in the future.
