Preparing
for the future, the Emergency Medical Services
Authority (EMSA), Tulsa, OK, has selected
BioconX network security software and Sony
Electronics’ FIU-710 fingerprint identification
units to safeguard access to its network
and applications. EMSA will install the
BioconX software and Sony hardware biometric
combination to prepare for the anticipated
computer security and data privacy requirements
of the Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act (HIPAA).
“Implementing biometrics to control access
to our IT assets is a critical element in
our security strategy to comply with HIPAA,”
says Steve Williamson, EMSA’s president
and chief executive officer. “We chose BioconX
software because of the ease of installation
and its ability to biometrically control
access to our network and applications without
any source code changes. Sony’s FIU-710
fingerprint identification units provide
the most accurate authentication technology
with the added benefit of portability.
“With BioconX software and Sony’s devices,
we automate biometric authentication, so
users can log on and launch all applications
for which they are authorized with a single
and secure biometric sign-on,” says Williamson.
“By replacing passwords with biometric authentication
and sign-on, we strengthen security, make
logging on easier and more convenient for
our users, and eliminate the hassle and
costs of help desk calls for password problems.”
BioconX security software applies biometrics,
the technology of authenticating individual
identity from unique personal characteristics,
to replace passwords and fortify computer
system security. BioconX software authenticates
the identity of users by comparing their
fingerprint or the iris of their eye against
all stored templates. BioconX supports major
operating systems, works with leading biometric
devices, and applies biometric security
enterprise-wide from the network level to
applications themselves—without requiring
any modification of application source code.
Sony’s FIU-710 fingerprint identification
unit (also known as the Puppy™ unit) is
a credit card-size biometric device that
uses a silicon-based capacitance sensor
to capture fingerprint images. The unit
performs all fingerprint matching and storage
functions on-board, which protects individual
users’ privacy while providing secure access
to information. The device is an external
peripheral that connects to computers via
a USB port. The device features USB drivers
for Windows® 98, 2000, and ME operating
systems. And a serial cable is available
as an optional accessory for use with Windows
NT software.
